Mebos is known as one of the oldest confections made in the Cape. Traditionally, apricots were processed this way to preserve them for longer, but it has since become a favourite amongst many South Africans. Mebos is a sweet that is made from dried apricots that are pulped and flavoured with sugar and salt. Only the very best, ripe apricots are used. Once flavoured, the apricot pulp is shaped into circles or sticks. It is said that the name derives from the Arabic â mush mushâ which translates to apricot.
For those who have not yet tasted this snack, the mix of sweet, salt, and sour may come as an initial shock to the system, but the more you try it, the more you will fall in love. With its high sugar content, mebos is also the perfect way to boost your energy during those afternoon slumps.
